On International Youth Day: Dr. Haider Abdel Shafi Center Condemns Occupation's Targeting of Youth and Calls for Their Protection and the Implementation of Resolution 2250
On International Youth Day, the Dr. Haider Abdel Shafi Center for Culture and Development condemns the occupation's targeting of youth and calls for their protection and empowerment, in line with Resolution 2250.
August 12th marks International Youth Day, as adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. This day comes amidst the ongoing genocide faced by our people in the Gaza Strip, where around 24% of the martyrs are youth, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.
The occupation continues to target youth, not only through killing, injury, and disability, but also through arrest, torture, and persecution.
The Palestinian society is a young, dynamic, and forward-moving community.
While we call on the international community to pressure the occupying state to stop its acts of oppression and genocide, which have affected all segments of our people, including the youth, we believe it is time to empower them and expand their participation in the making of Palestinian national decisions by enhancing their representation in Palestinian national and social institutions, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2250.
The center values the youth's efforts in carrying out numerous community initiatives amidst the occupation's genocidal war, including providing food, medical, shelter, and humanitarian aid. The center also emphasizes the need to continue these initiatives, which contribute to strengthening the social fabric and fortifying the internal front—one of the key conditions for thwarting the current occupation schemes, particularly concerning the so-called "next day," on the path to securing our people's rights to freedom, independence, and return.
