The Dr. Haider Abdul Shafi Center for Culture and Development organizes a dialogue session titled "Elections and Political Participation of Youth." The center hosted a dialogue session featuring Dr. Omar Rahal, the director of the Shams Center for Human Rights, using Zoom technology.
The session began with an opening statement from the center's director, Mr. Mohsen Abu Ramadan, highlighting the importance of elections as a means of renewing legitimacy, achieving partnership, and allowing young generations to assume leadership positions. He emphasized that elections are a constitutional right according to the Palestinian Basic Law.
Dr. Omar Rahal spoke about the Palestinian Basic Law, which emphasizes that the people are the source of authority and that citizens have the right to form parties, associations, and unions. He discussed the difficult situations faced by youth, including poverty, unemployment, aspirations for migration, feelings of frustration, and reluctance to participate.
He also addressed the weak participation of youth in the leadership bodies of political parties, universities, unions, and civil society organizations. Participants stressed the importance of increasing youth representation in Palestinian representative institutions such as the National Council, Legislative Council, and professional unions.
The participants emphasized the importance of enhancing the cultural knowledge of youth and empowering them to increase their participation in public life. This session coincided with International Youth Day.
