The Dr. Haydar Abdul Shafi Center held an awareness-raising meeting in collaboration with the Women's Affairs Center on climate change and its impact on women and vulnerable marginalized groups at its headquarters in Gaza City.
The meeting began with a welcoming speech from the facilitator of the meeting, Mr. Ahmed Abu Abda, welcoming the presence of journalists, both male and female. He then started with an introductory speech about climate change, its causes, and the factors influencing it. He discussed millions of people around the world who are already suffering from the devastating effects of extreme weather disasters exacerbated by climate change. He emphasized that the destruction caused by climate change will continue to pose a danger to humanity, especially to women and vulnerable marginalized social sectors in society.
He pointed out the close relationship between climate change and human rights principles, not only because of its impact on the environment but also on the well-being of communities. Climate change continues to worsen over time, causing harm and deterioration over time, leading to the destruction of current and future generations.
He also mentioned that women and girls' roles often revolve around roles and jobs that make them more reliant on natural resources. Since they face obstacles in accessing financial or technological resources or are deprived of land ownership, they are less able to adapt to climate change. This makes them more susceptible to the effects of climate-related events because they are less able to protect themselves from the effects of climate change and will find it more difficult to recover from its effects.
Participants also said that workshops like these contribute to enhancing knowledge and awareness of climate conditions and their impact, especially on women and marginalized social groups, with the aim of finding ways to mitigate them.
